Birmingham Inflammation and joint pain study onboarded to the Alleviate Hub and HDR Cohort Discovery Tool

Alleviate Pain Data Hub: Advancing UK Pain Data Standardisation

The Alleviate Pain Data Hub continues to make significant strides in standardising UK pain datasets to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) Common Data Model (CDM). This initiative has recently expanded to include the Birmingham Inflammation and Joint Pain study, led by Prof Simon Jones and Dr Susanne Wijesinghe from the University of Birmingham.

Key Developments

Metadata Availability: The metadata and supporting information for this study are now accessible through the newly launched HDR UK Metadata Catalogue.

OMOP Standardisation: With the study data now standardized to OMOP, researchers can utilize the HDR UK Cohort Discovery Tool to run discovery queries.

“The publication of this dataset on the HDR UK Gateway is an important step in making osteoarthritis pain data more accessible to the wider research community. By enabling researchers to explore transcriptomic and clinical data from well-characterised patient cohorts, we hope this resource will facilitate new insights into the mechanisms of joint pain and ultimately contribute to the development of better treatments for those living with osteoarthritis.”

Impact on Osteoarthritis Research

Data Types
This dataset contains patient reported pain recorded by questionnaire and using an anatomical knee pain map. Synovial tissue was obtained and fibroblast and transcriptomic sequencing of bulk RNA and single-cell RNA performed. Patients included were undergoing arthroscopy or total joint replacement, categorised as early knee OA (n=30) and end-stage knee OA (n=41) respectively.

Accessing the Data
Researchers interested in exploring this valuable dataset can:

  1. Visit the metadata catalogue entry for detailed information.
  2. Read the associated research paper that utilised this data for insights into its potential applications.

This standardisation effort by the Alleviate Pain Data Hub represents a significant step forward in pain research, potentially leading to improved treatments and a better understanding of joint pain mechanisms in osteoarthritis.

The Alleviate Pain Data Hub is a £2M collaborative project funded by a consortium of funders including Versus Arthritis and the UK Medical Research Council. The project is led by the University of Dundee and involves partners from across the UK. Alleviate is one of nine HDR UK Health Data Research Hubs.
